Why is Dev Diwali Celebrated?

Dev Diwali, or “Diwali of the Gods,” is observed in reverence of Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura. It is believed that on this day, the gods descend to Earth to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganga.

The occasion also honors India’s brave martyrs with patriotic songs, floral tributes, and performances by the armed forces, making it a fusion of divine spirituality and national pride.

When is Dev Diwali Celebrated?

Dev Diwali is celebrated on the full moon night of Kartik Purnima, exactly 15 days after the festival of Diwali. As per the Gregorian calendar, it usually falls in November or early December.

How is Dev Diwali Celebrated in Varanasi?

  • The celebration starts with chanting of Vedic mantras by priests.

  • Over one million earthen lamps (diyas) are lit across all 84 ghats of Varanasi, creating a surreal reflection on the Ganga.

  • The sky lights up with fireworks while devotional songs, classical dance performances, and boat parades mesmerize onlookers.

  • The tradition of lighting diyas was first started in 1985 at Panchganga Ghat, and it has now grown into one of Varanasi’s most iconic festivals.
